Purpose, capabilities, and what you will need

Purpose and capabilities of the carbon footprint tracking tool
The purpose of the carbon footprint tracking tool is to enable you to keep track of your household energy, transport, waste, and water usage, their associated costs, and their carbon emissions over multiple years, see how you compare from one year to the next, and highlight the "hot spots" of your carbon footprint (areas where you have the greatest potential for reducing your carbon emissions).

What will you need to take full advantage of the tracking tool?
What you need for this tracking tool is consistent with what you need for the online calculator.
This includes:
  • Your electricity bills for as far back as you have. Note, even if you just have 1 bill, the graph of historical usage supplied on your bill will allow you to fill in at least 1 years worth of data.
  • Your gas bills for as far back as you have. Once again, even if you just have 1 bill, the graph of historical usage supplied on your bill will allow you to fill in at least 1 years worth of data.
  • Your water bills for as far back as you have. While water does not result in any direct carbon emissions, it can still serve as a good indicator for your electricity or gas use needed for hot water heating.
  • An estimate of the amount of litres of fuel per week you use for your car(s).  If you have more of an idea of the amount you spend on petrol each week, there's a conversion helper table to allow you to turn dollars into litres of fuel.
  • The kilometres of air travel you have done.  If you only know the destinations you have flown to, there is a table of common destinations from melbourne and their distances, as well as a link to a website that will allow you to obtain flight distances.
  • The size of your waste bin and an estimate of how full it is each week when you put it out for collection.
  • Not all of this information is necessary for you to have on hand to use the tool, but the more you have, the better you can take advantage of the summary and comparison graphs at the end.
